The boy's name was Santiago. Dusk was falling as he arrived with his heard at an abandoned church. The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood. -from The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho
Summer is winding down and I'm reading a book I bought some ten years ago but never opened until now. One review at the front of the book states "The Alchemist is a beautiful book about magic, dreams and the treasures we seek elsewhere and then find at our doorstep." But that's always the way, spending a lifetime looking for what you already had.
We spent a week without a functioning AC recently. The remedy was a new unit and all the duct work blown out and reworked somewhat. Out of this week long ordeal we learned that our house has been very sick for some time now. What I was certain was the smell of a dying marriage and happy mice (definitely still part of the potpourri) was more probably the dirt/dust/dog hair clogged ducts, and the fact there was almost zero air return. With the new unit in place I have set forth cleaning the entire house from literally the ceilings to the baseboards. I cannot believe there is finally an end to the thick dirt-dust we have breathed in for the last three years or better. I'd waved my dust cloth as a white flag and walked off the battle field years ago. What point cleaning when the very next day every surface would be repopulated by the enemy? The house, once beloved sanctuary, had taken on an almost evil tinge. But now the difference in the whole house, even with several rooms remaining to be cleaned, is so tangible.
The second skin test was read as negative, though to me it behaved and looked very different from the first. The all important but 100% unnecessary appointment at Midlands Orthopedics is now behind me, costing a whopping $289.00 out of pocket with no guarantee I will get the position. The surgeon proclaimed nurse Bitchface's request for a medical release to be "superfluous nonsense" and I hand delivered it to her office immediately afterward, where I learned a few interesting tidbits. Seems she put her job in serious jeopardy with all of this bullshit and was counseled and placed on probation. And if that wasn't a firm enough open-handed slap from the universe, two days later her mother dropped dead. But that's none of my business.
